About the job
As Head of Model Shop, you will join the Design Team within Google's Devices and Services organization. You will coordinate the management and future development of our current Model Shop and Prototyping Lab, focused on fabricating high-quality prototypes and appearance models for consumer electronics products in a timely manner.
In this role, you will need to personify the expertise and professionalism necessary to gain confidence and build lasting strategic relationships with the various management and individual contributors of our hardware design teams (e.g., Industrial Design, Engineering, Operations, Marketing) as well as external work partners and suppliers. You will have the planning and collaboration skills to help define a vision and direction for the Model Shop across Design and the greater Devices and Services organization, in order to cultivate and maintain an inspired culture of creativity, innovation, trust, performance, and accountability.
Additionally, you will be responsible for Model Shop projects, resourcing, budgets, customer engagement, staff leadership and development, and overall business model evolution for this state-of-the-art facility. Your depth of expertise in building the “one of a kind” will be used to help plan for the “many of a kind” production processes and therefore knowledge of manufacturing processes outside the prototype lab is also important to success in this role.
Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. Only one thing consistently stands in the way between our users and the world's information—hardware. Our Consumer Hardware team researches, designs, and develops new technologies and hardware to make our user's interaction with computing faster, more powerful, and seamless. Whether finding new ways to capture and sense the world around us, advancing form factors, or improving interaction methods, our Consumer Hardware team is making people's lives better through technology.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate Model Shop activities and resources effectively to consistently deliver projects within budget and according quality and timeline goals. Identify, attract, develop, and retain professional, creative, and motivated team members.
- Work with internal work partners to set/manage priorities and expectations, workflow and navigate through roadblocks. Multitask, manage fabrication requests, and route to vendors as needed.
- Leverage prototype management experience to identify, deploy, and maintain the new equipment. Forecast, manage, and track overall Model Shop budgets and understand expenditure trade-offs.
- Promote effective cross-functional teamwork between Design, Product Development, Product Management, Manufacturing, and Operations
- Organize and manage large complex projects. Set and implement short and long-range technology strategies in concert with business growth objectives.
