From speaking to various laser techs and reps over the years (representing three different companies), my understanding is that cutting vinyl on the laser is very much not recommended, as you indicate. You can do it, but it's not really safe unless you have very good ventilation pumping outside the facility and away from people. Again, very much not recommended from a safety standpoint, but possible if you have no other choice. The techs have indicated to me that the released gas is pretty corrosive to the machine components as well (not as important as human health obviously, but still a consideration).
We use a Roland 30" vinyl cutter and have never had any issues with it. We're considering upgrading to a cutter/printer combo unit to aid in our tradeshow and display endeavors, will most likely go with Roland for that as well if we do as their machines have always been good to us. |
