From speaking to various laser techs and reps over the years (representing three different companies), my understanding is that cutting vinyl on the laser is very much not recommended, as you indicate. You can do it, but it's not really safe unless you have very good ventilation pumping outside the facility and away from people. Again, very much not recommended from a safety standpoint, but possible if you have no other choice. The techs have indicated to me that the released gas is pretty corrosive to the machine components as well (not as important as human health obviously, but still a consideration).

We use a Roland 30" vinyl cutter and have never had any issues with it. We're considering upgrading to a cutter/printer combo unit to aid in our tradeshow and display endeavors, will most likely go with Roland for that as well if we do as their machines have always been good to us.

Thanks for the reply Andrew.

What made you choose that level (USCutter lists this machine as professional grade) of machine over some cheaper units? Have you had any experience with other cutters in the past? I'm just trying to figure out what level of cutter is best for our shop and build a good case for one over another. Thanks in advance!

Jake your discoveries are correct. Cutting any type of vinyl is bad for you on a laser. The smoke it gives of is truly toxic.
We have a small Titan3 only 15" which while not used a whole lot has served us well and been easy to run.
Happy cutting

Andrew

This might not be the right place for this post, but it has come to light based on me wanting to keep our laser cutter in good working order.
So, for some time now we have been cutting sign vinyl on our laser cutter and I have become aware of the dangers of cutting vinyl on a laser cutter, both for the operators and for the machine.
I am aware that there is laser safe "vinyl", but I think for the same money to replace what we already have in stock we could probably get in a vinyl cutter.
Does anyone have any recommendations (good or bad) on brands, specific machines, features etc.? I have been perusing machines on USCutter's webpage. I'd be looking for something that can accept a 30" roll, as that is what most of what we have in stock is.
I have been looking at machines made by Titan and Graphtec. Any anecdotes about either are welcome.

Thanks in advance!
Jake
