Hello Ghazi,

In that case, since you don't have access to some of the nicer/newer tools, you will want to first create your 2D outlined vector based text in Adobe Illustrator (or something equivalent).

Then you have some options to...
  • Extrude flat text - (using Wire Cut Tool)
  • Emboss by raising linearly off the surface - (Using Raise/Lower function in the dynabar of the Wire Cut tool)
  • Emboss by surface normal - (using curves linearly projected from the sketch plane via Project Sketch tool (Detail Clay Palette); followed by Emboss with Curve (on the Detail Clay Palette)

To do any of the above, you will need outlined text that you can import into Freeform. This can be done in Illustrator or something similar.

Create text in Illustrator
  1. Make text in Illustrator
  2. Convert to outlined font
  3. Once created, specify that the outlined text to be stroked, and no fill
  4. Save the Illustrator file
  5. Then export the text from Illustrator as a DXF file, choosing an older version of the DXF format in the export options.

Then create 3D text in Freeform
  1. Select an empty plane
  2. Use the Import to Plane function (File Menu)to import the DXF file (vector outlines) into the sketch plane.
Then you can use the sketch profiles to create the text on your model using one of the following tools..
  • Wire Cut (to extrude flat text)
  • Emboss with Curve ( emboss the text onto the surface using curves projected to the surface from the sketch)
  • Emboss with Sketch Profile (skips the curve projection)

Hello Diane,

Thank you very much for your help but I think my software version does not have any of your suggestions. I have version 9.1 year 2007.

Regards,
Ghazi

Hello, hope this helps...

There are several ways to approach the task, but I begin with making the custom text in the Sketch Text tool (Sketch palette), and then use the Shell Cut tool (Construct Palette or Mesh Palette). FYI, both of which debuted in version 2017)

Shell Cut has some really nice capabilities for making surface following text, and there are also options to merge or not, inset/outset etc. Shell cut is available for meshes on the Mesh Tools palette, or voxels/clay on the Construct Clay palette.

Anther older tool is the Engrave Mesh tool (Mesh Tools Palette).
BTW, there also is an interactive training guide on the top of the Tool Palettes that walks one through some of the text options: "Guide to Creating 3d Labels...." (FYI: Training Guides palette debuted in version 2019).

Also, for in-tool help, just click on the tool's icon in the lower left corner of the dynabar and then expanding the "Dynabar Options" section. If you have any problems with the Online Help display, just set the Help feature to display in your standard browser (can do that in Tools Menu>Options).
