KEYNOTE SPEAKER | FON DAVIS
special effects wizard

Fonco Studios, Fon Davis’ motion picture and film effects company’s slogan is “That’s impossible… when do you want it?” Nothing speaks to the heart of a model maker louder than an impossible project made possible.

In his twenty-plus year career, Fon has worked on more than 30 feature films, including several while at Industrial Light and Magic’s model shop. With special effects for blockbuster movies like Star Wars, The Matrix and Terminator to his credit, Fon is uniquely qualified to discuss the art and craft of model making for film.

Fon also writes and develops his own projects, combining practical model making alongside CG effects. Last year, Fon joined us for a “Star Wars Day” meet-up where he discussed what inspires him, and how he creates miniatures as well as “bigatures” to bring a movie set to life.

The APMM welcomes Fon back to speak to the importance of hand skills in today’s technological world, and how he embraces the limelight to educate and inspire future model makers. Join us for what promises to be a lively discussion with an effects master!

FEATURED MODEL MAKER | BILL ROBERTSON
titan of fine miniatures

As a child, Robertson was fascinated by the models in the Smithsonian and was constantly building replicas of things that fascinated him. He grew up in a “craft culture” - a time when kids built their own toys.

At 21, he discovered the decorative arts world of miniatures and exhibited skills that made easy the decision to make that his profession.

For more than 40 years, Bill has worked as a full time craft artist and educator in the miniatures field. His work can be found in public and private collections. His techniques combine ancient shop practices and period tools as well as his own unique methods for the precision craftsmanship his miniatures require. Bill’s work is highlighted in our VCON2021 tour of the National Museum of Toys and Miniatures.

In an exclusive interview just for the APMM, Bill shares stories of his early commissions, what drives him to create his one-of-a-kind miniature models, and what he would build if money and time were unlimited. Don’t miss this unforgettable opportunity to meet this world-renowned miniaturist
